Our Curriculum

Our curriculum at Wings & Wellies Preschool is centred around the needs, interests, and development of each individual child. We want each child to feel excited to learn in a fun, stimulating, safe and engaging environment.

Our curriculum is formed using the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) and the Development Matters frameworks, focusing on the seven areas of learning and development which are:

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Communication and Language

Physical Development

Literacy

Mathematics

Understanding the World

Expressive Arts and Design

None of these seven areas of our curriculum can be delivered in isolation from the others. They are equally important and depend on each other.

All areas are delivered through a balance of child-initiated play, adult led teaching, and real-life experiences.

Our curriculum is underpinned by both our Hygge and Forest School approaches. We foster a love of outdoor learning thorough nature. Our regular Wellie Walks into the local environment cement the children’s learning in their own world, for example investigating the changing seasons, animal habitats and mini beast exploration. Annual visits from the fire brigade, a local beekeeper, and a trip on the local bus help to give the children a real-life experience to broaden their learning and understanding of the world in which they live.

We are passionate about fostering early literacy skills in each and every child, whilst supporting and developing their imaginary play. Our home corner forms the basis of their home life experiences and will regularly become a vets, police station or a café creating an environment in which they can learn from their own experiences and interests and one which is rich in their everyday language.

We recognise that each child learns and develops at their own rate and our highly skilled and dedicated practitioners watch, listen and plan for each child’s next steps. They draw on the children’s interests but challenge them to have a can-do approach which extends their learning and supports their developing confidence and resilience.

You will be able to follow the development of your child through our online Tapestry learning journals and our termly ‘Let’s Talk’ meetings with your keyworkers.

Our ultimate aim is that when your child leaves our preschool to start at primary school they are –

  • Independent, excited young learners
  • They can form and retain strong relationships with their peers and the adults they spend time with
  • They are resilient and can deal with change.
  • They have strong personal skills, being able to dress themselves independently and understand their own personal care.
  • They have a love of the natural world and the world in which they live.

Each day is different at Wings & Wellies, but each is full of fun and engaging learning, all brought to life with a little extra Wings & Wellies sparkle!
